A Gallery Visit

Our part of town has a particularly strong association with modern art. Around the same time as we established the bespoke house on Elder Street, a new generation of British artists, the so-called “YBA’s”, made East London their home, setting up studios and galleries in the old warehouse and industrial buildings that proliferate our neighbourhood.

Pauls Hedge and Maslin moved their Hales Gallery from Deptford to the iconic Tea Building on Bethnal Green Road in 2004. Showcasing under-represented artists with interests in “class, race and gender’, as Hedge explains it, creates an interesting ever-changing series of exhibitions merely yards from our Redchurch Street store.

Alex and Tony took a quick break from the cutting table and shop floor for a cultural ‘recharge’ at the gallery. The current works on display come from Anwar Jalal Shemza (1928-85), a Kashmiri-Punjabi artist who relocated to Britain in the 1950s to study at Slade School of Art. His work is a fascinating and vibrant mix of modernist abstraction and traditional Islamic iconography and geometry, which boldly resonates off the bare white walls of the gallery.
