The 2017 Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, took place in LA on Sunday 26th February. It was a heady mix of glamour and decadence, balanced out with strong messages of strength, unity and hope.
Did you know there was only one British Oscar win of the night? Orlando von Einsiedel and Joanna Natasegara scooped the award for ‘Best Documentary Short Story’ for their inspiring and iconic documentary about the war in Syria titled ‘The White Helmets’. We were honoured to dress Orlando for this momentous occasion; he wore one of our single breasted black peak lapel dinner suits with silk facings. Orlando visited us in our Redchurch Street store where he had a fitting earlier this month. He’s a lovely gentleman, with a real passion for highlighting the work in inspiring individuals and groups.
‘The White Helmets’ is a documentary about the volunteer rescue workers of the same name who risk their lives on a daily basis to pull others from the bomb wreckage in Syria, and is exclusive to Netflix. You can watch the trailer here.
Von Einsiedel told BBC Breakfast: “It feels humbling if I’m honest. When we started this project the entire thing was to try and spread the word and magnify the voices of the White Helmets, the heroes at the heart of our film, and I feel that we’ve had the best platform to do that that we could have even imagined.”
On stage, director Von Einsiedel read a statement from The White Helmets’ founder Raed Saleh calling for an end to the “bloodshed in Syria”; “Our organisation is guided by a verse from the Koran: ‘To save one life is to save all of humanity. We have saved more than 82,000 civilian lives. I invite anyone here who hears me to work on the side of life, to stop the bloodshed in Syria and around the world. It’s very easy for these guys to feel they’re forgotten. This war’s been going on for six years. If everyone could just stand up and remind them that we all care, that this war ends as quickly as possible.”
